Nop – a practical and organic neighbourhood rendezvous.

Neighbourhoods are lovely, each one is singular and unique. It is wonderful to have places in the vicinity where you can run into friends and acquaintances. It is with those words that Nop introduces itself on its website.

There are several neighbourhood-oriented local shops and eateries in Tallinn. However, compared to Nop, their purpose seems to be the opposite in most cases – to add some foreign feel to the local atmosphere.

A visitor to Nop can indeed feel like at least a temporary inhabitant of the wooden house quarter on the border of Kadriorg. Everything feels so homelike.
“On the one hand, we want the locals to feel at home here. On the other hand, we wish to make them smile in recognition of the different things encountered in other parts of the world,” explains Laul, Nop’s manager.

There are three Nops under one roof - restaurant, takeaway and shop. Everything on the menu can also be purchased for takeaway. Food products which are used are fresh and seasonal. The product selection in the shop is organic when possible, but not all of it.

Nop is always well-attended, by both locals and others.

One can always order breakfast in Nop – whenever it is morning for a particular customer.

Midday is already approaching when I order rye flake porridge with dried cranberries, eggs Benedict with salmon and green salad, and a cranberry-banana smoothie. Food is quickly served, fresh and delicious. Portion sizes are large enough to suffice for both breakfast and lunch. And the price means that if you are eating alone, there is little difference whether to cook at home or eat at Nop.
The client’s satisfaction or dissatisfaction is usually determined by small details. How many cafés in Tallinn really pay attention to what kind of coffee they serve and how?

In Nop coffee is regarded just as highly as wine is in a good wine cellar. It is a Brazilian press pot coffee made from beans grown in a plantation called Fazenda Cachoeira da Grama. The plantation has been owned by the Carvalho Dias family since 1890, recently it gave its 106th crop. Some of the plantation’s Bourbon coffee trees are 107 years old.
Typical of Brazilian coffee, it is sweetish with a hint of caramel, succulent, creamy and rich. The aftertaste combines elements of nut, caramel and dark chocolate. An excellent constituent of an espresso blend.

This information originates from the leaflet brought to the table with the coffee. Also, the muffins served with the coffee taste as if they had been baked just for the purpose.

TOP 50 OF ESTONIAN RESTAURANTS

This ranking is born out of the votes of the key employees of various Estonian restaurants. Each voter compiles a personal list of 7 restaurants that he or she thinks are the best in Estonia. The voters must have visited these places and the list cannot include the voters’ employers or restaurants related to their personal property.

The restaurants that have been included in someone’s top 7 are invited to cast their votes as well. Each restaurant can appoint up to three of their most important employees as their voters: one member from the management team, one member from the kitchen staff and one member from the service staff.

Taking part in the voting is strictly voluntary, not obligatory. The top 50 of Estonian restaurants is made up of restaurants that win the greatest number of votes.
