Inside the restaurant, every square meter is important. Even the smallest careless gesture means you will bump into someone.
Sitting so close to one another it is easy to feel like conspirators. We are here for the same reason. We are kindred spirits.
And we actually are. Why else would we come to dine at the restaurant without knowing what lies ahead. It is not possible to book a table for lunch. The menu is written on a blackboard and nowhere else.
It is absolutely necessary to make a reservation for dinner though. If you succeed, all you will know in advance is that the meal consists of three dishes and costs € 43.
Those not interested in such a restaurant can pass it by without worrying about it too much, since there are enough of those who are more than willing to stop by.
On the day of taking the pictures, the menu included white asparagus with salmon and cucumber ceviche, and herb salad. The asparagus had been picked in Holland a few days earlier and sent to the restaurant immediately. This freshness is clearly there in the taste. This is how they cook at Kolo, buying raw material for a single day at a time.
Scallops with herb risotto and spring onion. The scallops have just been caught in Denmark and sent to the restaurant in salt water without freezing.
Local raw material is preferred at Kolo, but this is not a goal in its own right. Freshness, however, is a goal in its own right.
And look at the wine! You are unlikely to find this label anywhere else in Finland.
Crème brûlée with fennel seeds and ice cream made of cream. The cream under the glassy surface flows; there are no words to praise the ice cream made on the spot.
The wines for Kolo are sought out by three suppliers. They are mostly bought directly from tiny niche producers. This way it is possible to offer the visitors of the restaurant beverages that have character and come at good prices.
The price side of the wine list is indeed remarkable for its small numbers. Champagnes cost € 65–70, sparkling wines € 36–48, wines by the bottle € 26–69. By glass € 4.80–8.
Kolo – one could stay here forever!
