Estonia and competitions in 2009

Ene Ojaveski

2009 was successful for Estonians who took part in different food and drink competitions. To be honest, this was the best year ever. Cooks, sommeliers and baristas made unbelievable efforts when competing in international competitions, so that the number of medals kept increasing. As well as fame and the number of useful experiences, of course. Thanks to that the reputation of Estonia, a newcomer in the culinary world, has grown immensely during the last year. We have made our way to the so-called culinary map.  Hopefully, for good.

Many people say that a competitive situation is not real life and they are right in a way. Some rich countries are able to support the training of their chefs and mould them into world-class professionals. Yet the dishes served daily in the restaurants of those countries may not be so tasteful at all… And vice versa.

Such a situation is fortunately not a problem in Estonia. We have a number of high-level restaurants and chefs with interestingly distinctive features. And also the coffee, served in these restaurants, measures up. We often do not notice it, because we are so used to that. This tends to happen with good things.

The following stories are the success stories of Estonia in 2009.

    TOP 50 OF ESTONIAN RESTAURANTS

This ranking is born out of the votes of the key employees of various Estonian restaurants. Each voter compiles a personal list of 7 restaurants that he or she thinks are the best in Estonia. The voters must have visited these places and the list cannot include the voters’ employers or restaurants related to their personal property.

The restaurants that have been included in someone’s top 7 are invited to cast their votes as well. Each restaurant can appoint up to three of their most important employees as their voters: one member from the management team, one member from the kitchen staff and one member from the service staff.

Taking part in the voting is strictly voluntary, not obligatory. The top 50 of Estonian restaurants is made up of restaurants that win the greatest number of votes.
